Configuring/Reconfiguring an EMC Data Domain 2500 (quick and dirty)

We’re adding a quickie here because we ran into this last week, and it had a few bumps in the road…and there’s an absolute lack of helpful documentation out there. Maybe Morgan will even do a youtube one day. Those are really helpful!

  1. Connect  a serial or USB to serial from laptop/pc to serial connector 9600,8,None,None, 1 (emulation is VT100)
  2. The username is sysadmin, the password is the serial number (on a flag that pulls out of the top of the case cover in the back.
  3. Type setup config
  4. Configure one of the many ports for the address you want to use, leave all other ports disabled (you can enable them later with the manager).
  5. Use a web browser to go to the manager ( http://ipaddress )
  6. Congrats, you can build out from here.

ALWAYS make sure you’re enabling the correct port so that you can web access the data domain. This is the image that I use because the manual doesn’t exactly correlate to the port name!

Some possible scenarios:

You need to reconfigure one that has already been configured

  1. Setup same as above, but you’ll have to eliminate the existing file system, do this with the command filesys destroy   , this destroys the filesystem and any replications, etc…These can’t be easily deleted otherwise, because it wants to see all of the old relationships to remove them correctly….but if you’re rebuilding/reconfiguring one, you don’t need the hassle.
  2. Now using the gui manager, you can create a new filesystem.
